Rees Associates' solution to a space that was originally designed to be part of a parking garage resulted in a wide-open facility with technology and futuristic equipment on display.
The WJLA space is approximately 80,000 square feet and accommodates two stations, WJLA (an ABC affiliate) and NewsChannel 8 (a 24-hour cable news channel), three multi-media conference rooms, and over 200 workstations for reporters, anchors and administration. The facility is located in a retail mall of small shops, restaurants, business services and medical clinics.
Rees offered knowledge of the broadcast industry and technology, plus a 14-year relationship with Allbritton Communications, in accommodating the news stations to this unusual space. Rees created a functional and technically efficient plan, while offering a brilliant design that is comfortable and inviting to all who enter.
The facility is located in an area that spans the base of two 34-story office towers, which partially overlook the Potomac River. WJLA’s studio, control room and audio control are located one level above the main facility, while the NewsChannel 8 studio and operation are fully embedded in the activity of the main floor level.
