Bethune Elementary encompasses Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade in a cluster classroom “pod” configuration surrounding classroom support functions.
REES’ design solution sought to eliminate self-contained classrooms by creating a plan which promotes interactive, cooperative instructional methods, the integration of technology and community involvement in the teaching process.
Unusual conditions affecting the project’s design and cost included escarpment zone regulations and constraints. Site development requirements associated with escarpment permitting included storm water detention facilities, erosion control during construction, and protection of existing trees and other site vegetation. The designed addressed a five to eight foot grade change on the “buildable” portion of the site, as well as vehicular and pedestrian circulation and traffic flow. Off-site utilities extensions were required for the school as well as future neighborhood development.
